best ergonomic recliner

Experts recommend purchasing ergonomic reclining chairs that have the right height and depth, firm cushioning and proper body support. The chair must follow the contour of the body to reduce the tension and stress on the body. That is the reason why we have compiled the list to help you find the best ergonomic recliner for you.

Body strains are caused by a lot of factors. According to the website Ergonomics Plus, it can be caused by excessive force, excessive repetition, awkward posture and other environment factors. Awkward posture is often caused by poor equipment. Office seats tend to just be the standard swivel chairs. These chairs do not give the proper arm, leg and lumbar support. As with any disease and condition, prevention is better than treatment. One of the many ways to avoid body strains is by using ergonomic recliners.

In an interview with New York Times, ergonomics consultant and kinesiologist Margo Fraser said that most people often attribute their discomfort and pain to old injury when in fact these are caused by their furniture.

Flash Furniture Contemporary Black Leather Recliner / Ottoman

Flash Furniture Contemporary Black Leather Recliner / Ottoman

The first chair on the list is from Flash Furniture is actually a set. It is a recliner and ottoman all in one. It is padded using durable leather. The chair reclines using a lever. The base is a ball-bearing swivel. The set weighs around 56 pounds. It is only available in black and rich brown.

We had an easy time assembling the chair. It took us around an hour to assemble it. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. However, the chair does not have an adjustable headrest. It also goes a little down too low. Furthermore, the chair makes a little noise whenever we recline it. But nonetheless, the chair is very comfortable considering its price.

What We Like

  • It is a recliner and ottoman in one
  • It uses quality durable leather as padding
  • The base is a ball-bearing swivel

What We Don't Like

  • The chair does not have an adjustable headrest
  • It goes down too low, tall people might have a little problem

Manufacturers boast that this chair is an eleven (11) in one (1). The chair is a recliner, rocker, drink holders, front pouches, padded armrests, adjustable back cushion, massage, heat, side pouches, 360-degree swivel and high back.

It is made from leather. It only comes in brown. The product’s dimensions are 38 x 34 x 42 inches and it weighs 121 pounds.

It was also very easy to assemble. The two features we loved the most out of all the features are the heat and eight-point massage. But, the foot rest is hard to return to its original position.

  • The chair is very comfortable

Rissanti Palermo Collection Ottawa Zerostrain Recliner

Rissanti Palermo Collection Ottawa Zerostrain Recliner

The Rissanti Palermo Collection Ottawa Zerostrain Recliner is made using stylish bonded leather. The swivel base has a chrome finish. Like the Flash Furniture recliner, it is also two-in-one (a reclining chair and ottoman). The back recliner and leg recliner have separate controls.

We love the design. It is sleek, chic and perfect for small spaces. Manufacturers claim that it is fire-resistant and stain-resistant. We are not yet sure that it is fire-resistant but we could vouch that it is stain-resistant. It can be easily cleaned using a damp cloth or tissue.

It’s very comfortable. However, the foot rest does not extend much. A tall person would have a hard time using it.

Oslo Collection Mac Motion Leather Recliner with Matching Ottoman

Oslo Collection Mac Motion Leather Recliner with Matching Ottoman

The Oslo Collection Mac Motion Leather Recliner with Matching Ottoman is a vintage classic. The expresso and walnut finish gives it a retro vibe. It is made from Alpine deep hardwood and top grain leather upholstery.

Among its many features is the wrap around seat, adjustable reclining back, 360-degree swivel, and adjustable head rest. Just like the other models in the Oslo Collection, it also uses a MX-2 memory foam.

We had a difficult time putting it together especially the ottoman. The seat is very comfortable. However, it is still reclined at its most upright position. We would say it’s more for just lounging. We wouldn’t recommend it as an office chair.

What We Like

  • The classic Norwegian design is absolutely neat
  • It uses a MX-2 memory foam
  • It has an adjustable reclining back, 360-degree swivel and adjustable head rest

What We Don't Like

Esright Massage Recliner Chair

Esright Massage Recliner Chair

This ergonomic chair gives us spa feels. Its chic design and built-in massager makes it a perfect addition to your living room. The back cushion and armrest are padded with extra thick sponge and covered in sturdy and soft PU leather. It comes in three colors – cream, black and brown.

Aside from the aforementioned features, it also has four storage bags and two cup holders. It also has 150-degree recline and 360-degree swivel features. It comes with a power cord and remote controller. The massager has two intensity levels and five control modes.

Assembly time was just under an hour. The Esright Massage Recliner chair is very relaxing. To be frank, we did not expect much from the massage function of this chair but we were pleasantly surprised. We had a difficult time popping the foot rest in and out though.

What We Like

  • The massage function is wonderful. It was a pleasant surprise
  • We love its stylish design
  • It has a 150-degree recline and 360-degree swivel features

Giantex Recliner Massage Sofa Chair

Giantex Recliner Massage Sofa Chair

Like the Esright Massage Recliner Chair, the Giantex Recliner Chair also has a massage feature. It has five massage modes namely normal, auto, wave, press and pulse. It has a zone selection function wherein you could choose which body part the chair would massage. It could be either the legs, lumbar, thighs and back. Each zone could be operated separately. It also has eight vibrating nodes and different levels of intensity. Aside from the massager, it also has a heat function. These functions are easily controlled using a remote control.

The back rest and leg rest are adjustable. The side pockets are also enough to store magazines and other reading materials.

It was fairly easy to assemble. But we realized it is smaller and narrower than expected. Taller and bigger people might not fit in it. It does not also heat up that much.

What We Like

  • The massage function is really good
  • It has adjustable back rest and leg rest
  • It is fairly easy to assemble

What We Don't Like

  • It is smaller and narrower than expected

Serta Perfect Lift Chair

Serta Perfect Lift Chair

The Serta Perfect Lift Chair is a heavy duty reclining chair. The leather, foam and mechanisms of this chair are built to last. The manufacturers include a lifetime replacement warranty for the moving parts of this recliner.

What we love most about this chair is the hand held remote. Users no longer have to strain themselves from pushing or pulling any mechanism to recline the chair. With just a push of a button, the chair will recline on its own.

Aside from the aforementioned, it also has a built-in USB port for mobile device charging. Furthermore, the foam of this chair is gel-infused. This feature helps on relieving key pressure points in the body.

Personally, we do not like the design of the chair. It is too bulky and old-fashioned.

What We Like

  • We love that it moves with just one push of a button
  • It has a built-in USB port for mobile device charging
  • The gel-infused foam of the chair is wonderful

Langria Living Padded Recliner Sofa Chair

Langria Living Padded Recliner Sofa Chair

The last ergonomic reclining chair on the list is the Langria Living Padded Recliner Sofa Chair. It reclines from 105 degrees to 165 degrees. It is perfect for bigger individuals. When fully reclined, it spans 61 inches from the headrest to the foot rest. It has a 225-pound total weight capacity. The arm rest and foot rest are detachable.

The chair is covered in faux suede and uses premium soft foam as padding. We found the faux suede to be very soft and smooth. However, we wish it was in a difficult color. The seat is only available in beige. This color tends to get dirty easily.

  • It reclines from 105 degrees to 165 degrees
  • The arm rest and foot rest are detachable
  • The fax suede is very smooth

What We Don't Like

  • It is only available in one color

Reasons to Buy An Ergonomic Recliner

Aside from beds, chairs are probably the most glorious inventions man has ever made. A long day at work will truly take a toll on anyone. And that is where ergonomic recliners come in. These chairs are specifically built to provide the luxuries of a spa in the comfort of one’s home. The following are the top five reasons why you should purchase an ergonomic recliner:

1. Comfort

This is probably the most common reason why a lot of people buy recliners. The comfort it provides is way more than a normal chair would. The features of the chair are tailored to provide such.

Some chairs even have a built-in massager. With an ergonomic chair, you also have the luxury of support.

2. Support

The ergonomic chair is designed specifically to cater to the shape and curves of the human body. Most ergonomic chairs are made from mesh. This will mold according to the shape of the body. Some high-end ones will even use memory foam. As its name suggests, a memory foam reacts to the body heat and molds according to the shape of the body within a few minutes. After use, it will regain its original shape.

3. Concentration

Aside from being a living room sofa or entertainment set fixture, ergonomic chairs are also used as office chairs. Because it limits pain and discomfort, office workers will be able to focus more on their work. Office workers will be able to focus and get more work done.

4. Relief from pain

One of the many plights of office workers is the pain from sitting all day. Imagine sitting in a regular swivel chair for six to eight hours. Imagine how sore you’d get. An ergonomic chair helps prevent and relieve such discomfort and pain.

Bad posture may cause several health problems. It can lead to headaches, neck pains, and leg cramps. It can even further aggravate scoliosis. Yoga instructor and posture guru Carol Krucoff, who wrote Healing Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Pain, said that bad posture can lead to depression.

5. Poor blood circulation

Small chairs usually cut blood circulation in the legs. It is a must that the legs are kept at a ninety- degree angle to keep the blood properly circulating. Poor blood circulation can cause cramps and other health problems. A good chair will prevent this from happening.

Factors to Consider When Buying An Ergonomic Recliner

After discussing the different reasons why you should get yourself an ergonomic chair, it is now but fitting to discuss the factors to consider when purchasing one. In a book called ‘Ergonomic Seating Guide Handbook published by Haworth, Inc., the following are some of these factors:

1. Lumbar support

The best lumbar support is a chair with an asymmetric adjustable support. This type of chair offers the best available performance. It allows the user to adjust the height while adjusting the support for the spine. In a recent study, it was discovered that 74% want to have more support for one side of their spine than the other.

If you cannot find a chair with that specifications, you can also settle for one with either a Fixed Support, Single-Axis Adjustable Support or Dual-Axis Adjustable Support.

2. Good Armrest Support

It can considerably reduce the tension and stress on the spine. Look for a chair with at least 4” vertical armrest adjustment. Also look for one with a front-to-back arm rest adjustment feature. Furthermore, it is also important to consider if the armrest can pivot to adjust to the width of the user.

3. Seat Depth Adjustment

A good ergonomic seat can be adjusted at least 2 inches.

4. Ccontrol Features

Control motion is indicated by feel, control location is consistent, it can easily be controlled using the hands and the desired adjustments must be made while seated.

5. Seat Recline Mechanisms

In recent studies, it was discovered that a 20-degree tilt in the chair would reduce stress on the spinal discs by at least forty percent (40%). Look for a seat that has a three-point pivot. The user has the ability to adjust and ‘look for’ the most comfortable position. It also allows for a deeper recline. A deeper recline greatly reduces the pain in the thighs and lumbar area. If unable to find a chair with such feature, you can also purchase one with either a synchronous tilt or single-pivot point.

Additionally, the chair must also have a forward tilt option. The following features are plus factors: (1) can support up to 500 pounds, (2) inclusion of table stools, (3) defeatured chairs which are great for conference meetings and (4) low height bases.

Conclusion

We may not notice it but our furniture may do more bad than good. It is high time that we listen to our body and look for furniture that will not only provide comfort but will also help improve our health. In the aforementioned list, the best ergonomic recliner is the GMS Massage Recliner Leather Sofa Chair. It has 11 different features despite its mid-price range. It is also very easy to assemble.

It should always be remembered that proper use of the furniture is also vital to get optimal results.
